A friend from the media called me today and asked me seriously, "Why is the flag raised in Tiananmen Square only raised to 28.3 meters?" I asked in surprise, who told you that the flag raised in Tiananmen Square was 28.3 meters high? ! He replied to me that it was spread all over the Internet. I recall that Yu Hai, chairman of the Chinese Music Association Wind Music Society, asked me a similar question a few days ago. We were doing a special program on the national flag and the national anthem on TV. Chairman Yu Hai asked me, is the flagpole in Tiananmen Square 30 meters or 32.6 meters?
Internet rumors have confused both the media and Teacher Yu Hai, which is no trivial matter. I checked the Internet, and there are rumors about "why the flag is only raised at 28.3 meters every time in Tiananmen Square", and there are also rumors that "the height of the flagpole in Tiananmen Square is 28.3 meters".
In the spring of 1991, when I was the leader of the Tiananmen National Flag Squad, I personally witnessed the construction of the Tiananmen National Flag Base Reconstruction Project at the flag post in Tiananmen Square. On the evening of April 15, 1991, I led Xie Fengjue and Zhou Zhiyong to lower the last national flag on the 22-meter flagpole in Tiananmen Square. That night, after intense construction, the old 22-meter-high flagpole in Tiananmen Square was decommissioned and pulled up, and the new 30-meter-high flagpole stood tall.
In the early morning of April 16, 1991, I led Sun Tao and Han Weijun to complete the first flag-raising task for the opening of the new 30-meter flagpole in Tiananmen Square, and pressed the button to raise the first national flag on the new flagpole. On May 1, 1991, the Tiananmen National Flag Guard was established, and the flag-raising ceremony in Tiananmen Square was expanded from 3 to 36 people. Comrade Luo Gan, Secretary-General of the State Council at that time, and the head of the Armed Police Force participated in the first flag-raising ceremony after the reconstruction of the national flag base in Tiananmen Square and the establishment of the National Flag Guard.
The fact is that the height of the flagpole is the height of the hoisting flag. If the 30-meter flagpole in Tiananmen Square only raises the flag to 28.3 meters, it does not rise to the top, and there is still a distance of 1.7 meters from the top, which is a violation of the National Flag Law.
Therefore, it is clarified here that the flagpole of Tiananmen Square, which has been in use since April 16, 1991, is 30 meters high, and the normal flag-raising height is also 30 meters. There is no rumor of a height of 28.3 meters. I also hope that the media will check the information and data of the China National Flag Network and the WeChat official account of the Flag Raiser Alliance before making relevant publicity.
