world vexillology day

27th International Congress of Vexillology held in London in 2017, the FIAV General Assembly recognized October 1 as the World Vexillology Day. This move is to implement the requirements of the FIAV Constitution (statutes) to promote flag studies. The idea to designate and mark the day was conceived by the Portland Flag Association in 2016 and has since been supported by many FIAV members. For more background on the adoption of World Flag Day, see Scott Mainwaring's article on the idea in the PFA at:  https://portlandflag.org/2016/09/16/1-october - is-world- vexillology-day/.

To date, conventions have been established for every institution and individual to commemorate World Vexillology Day in an appropriate manner to popularize flag science to the masses. Some organisations hold public lectures, others host exhibitions and flag raising ceremonies, flag-related workshops for children in museums or libraries, or maybe just informal gatherings of ethnographers and friends - do whatever you think works best for you A community thing! Commemorating World Flag School Day should be nonpartisan and used solely to promote flag studies as a field of scientific research.

FIAV would like to hear about your plans and what activities are taking place, and looks forward to your coverage of these events and activities in journals and local media. Please also post your event on the World Vexillology Day Facebook page at   https://portlandflag.org/2016/09/16/    https://www.facebook.com/vexillologyday/
