The spring breeze has turned the shores of West Lake green once again, and once again the Asian Games flag-raisers are being recruited. As the games were postponed for one year, many of the 2022 volunteers will soon join the army or be allocated jobs after graduation, so from 22 to 27 February 2023, an interview and selection process for the recruitment of additional volunteers was carried out in Zhejiang universities.
Since the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, the "Chinese style" flag-raising ceremony has been used in every major international competition, and is praised by some as an example of Chinese creativity and ingenuity. In the same tradition as the Olympic Games flag-raising ceremony, the flags of the three medal winners are raised and the national anthem of the gold medallist is played. It is this moment that athletes all over the world fight hard to experience, the focus of media attention, making it the most political and solemn ceremony of the Games.
The attitude and precision of the flag raisers is key to the success of the ceremony. It shows the commitment of the host country to proper flag etiquette. The flag raising team is also a special national team of dedicated volunteers. The recruiting universities attach great importance to the selection of the flag raisers: Zhejiang University, Zhejiang Construction Institute of Technology, Zhejiang Jiaotong Vocational and Technical College and other colleges and universities have pre-selected and sent nearly 600 students to participate in expert interviews and evaluations. The vide-president of the Zhejiang Construction Institute of Technology, Cheng Weiding, visited the selection site and had a cordial talk with head examiner Zhao Xinfeng, the designer of the "Chinese style" flag-raising ceremony for the Beijing Olympics. Cheng said that the volunteers who participated in last year's training and examinations have all made great improvements in patriotic spirit and commitment to the mission, and that this will be of great help to them greatly grow and improve after joining the army.
Due to the short training period for the Asian Games flag raisers, and in order to improve the effectiveness of the training, reduce the elimination rate and make the flag-raising ceremony in Hangzhou and elsewhere follow the same standard, the three Olympics flag-raising expert Zhao Xinfeng stressed the importance of selection and personally acted as the examiner to select the flag raisers. Contestants were selected to participate in training based on factors such as flag-raising awareness, physical qualities, or their coordination and reaction abilities. Dong Leilei, Secretary of the Youth League Committee of Zhejiang Security Vocational College, Zhang Haifeng, Secretary of the Youth League Committee of Ningbo College of Finance and Economics, Chen Weiwei, Secretary of the Youth League Committee of Zhejiang Construction Vocational College, Jiang Shun, Secretary of the Youth League Committee of Zhejiang Transportation Vocational College and officials from related universities all participated in the interview process. Participating university officials reflected that they had learned a lot by taking part in the flag raisers selection process, and that it had helped them gain a better understanding of international working standards.
The selected flag raisers come from a variety of backgrounds, including former Tiananmen armed police, Nanjing Road Eighth Company soldiers, troops stationed in Macau, as well as retired soldiers who have taken part in major events, such as the 70th anniversary of the founding of the PRC or the National Games ceremonies, and student/internet celebrities with millions of fans, mainly students from Cadet College and university flag raisers. After the final training assessment, the list of flag-raisers for the Hangzhou Asian Games will be officially determined based on their overall performance, and the flag raisers will be assigned to their posts and trained in practical exercises at the venue.
